Richard H. Steen is the managing member of Richard H. Steen, LLC, Attorneys at Law, an AV rated law firm in Mercer County, New Jersey. Mr. Steen concentrates his practice in the areas of construction, complex commercial, environmental, and professional responsibility matters and alternative dispute resolution. He is an experienced mediator, arbitrator, trainer, and facilitator, and has served as a neutral in more than two thousand cases in the Federal and State Courts, for the American Arbitration Association and in private proceedings. Mr. Steen has been selected for the annual Best Lawyers in America and New Jersey Super Lawyers lists for more than ten years.

Mr. Steen is a Past President of the New Jersey State Bar Association. He is a member of the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals and a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators. He has served in the ABA House of Delegates and is a Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and the National Conference of Bar Presidents. Mr. Steen is a past chair of the NJSBA Construction Law Section and was the founding chair of the NJSBA Dispute Resolution Section. He is the recipient of the New Jersey State Bar Association’s 2012 Professional Lawyer of the Year Award; 1998-1999 ADR Practitioner of the Year Award; 2002 Distinguished Legislative Services Award and 2007 Legends of ADR Award. Mr. Steen is a Master and a Past President of the Justice Marie L. Garibaldi American Inn of Court for Alternative Dispute Resolution and recipient of the Inn’s 2017 Richard K. Jeydel Excellence in ADR Award. He has served as a Director and chair of the ADR Committee of the New Jersey Corporate Counsel Association.

Mr. Steen is an Accredited Professional Mediator in the New Jersey Association of Professional Mediators and a past member of the Association's Board of Directors. He is a member of the New Jersey Supreme Court Standing Committee on Complementary Dispute Resolution. He has served on the Supreme Court Arbitration Advisory Committee and the Advisory Committee on Mediator Standards. He served on the Steering Committee of Division 1, Dispute Avoidance and Resolution, of the ABA Forum on the Construction Industry and as co-chair of the Construction Subcommittee of the ADR Committee of the ABA Litigation Section.

Mr. Steen is past chair of the American Arbitration Association's New Jersey Construction Advisory Council. He is a member of the AAA’s National Roster of Neutrals, including the Master Mediator Panel, the Large Complex Case Arbitration Panel and the National Construction and Commercial Arbitrator Training Faculties.

Mr. Steen is a contributing author of Partnering in Design and Construction (McGraw- Hill, Inc., New York, N. Y., 1995) and of The Construction Dispute Resolution Formbook (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., New York, N. Y., 1997), and author of numerous papers and articles on construction law, dispute management and alternative dispute resolution. He served as editor of two special issues of New Jersey Lawyer - The Magazine devoted to alternative dispute resolution and construction and public contract law, and as editor of the New Jersey State Bar Association Construction and Public Contract Law Newsletter. Mr. Steen lectures for the American Bar Association, Practicing Law Institute, New Jersey Judicial College, New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education (NJICLE), Council of State Governments and many other educational, industry and professional organizations. He is the recipient of the NJICLE 2006 Distinguished Service Award.

Mr. Steen has served as Legislative Counsel to the New Jersey State Bar Association and Staff Counsel to the New Jersey General Assembly. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce and Engineering from Drexel University and is a graduate of the Seton Hall University School of Law where he was a founding director of the Seton Hall Legislative Bureau and the first co-editor-in-chief of the Seton Hall Legislative Journal.
